Dr. Richard Smith is a graduate of the Sackler School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and his Cardiology fellowship at Winthrop University Hospital. He has Board Certification in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Comprehensive Adult Echocardiography, including Transesophageal imaging.

 Dr. Smith served on staff at Winthrop University Hospital for eight years, where he directed the echocardiography program and cardiology clinics. There he was elected outstanding attending physician of the year, both in cardiology and internal medicine. In addition, he has been an assistant professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His teaching has influenced cardiologists both in the Long Island area and throughout the country. 

Dr. Smith's clinical research involving atrial fibrillation patients was previously published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In addition to multiple scientific publications, he has also published poetry and short stories, and has enjoyed performing his works publicly. His special interests include non-invasive cardiology with an emphasis on risk factor modification, atrial fibrillation, left ventricular diastolic function, and most importantly, the human condition. He states, “Medicine is both an art and a science, and a good clinician should incorporate an understanding of this philosophy into the care of his or her patients.”
